About

Anna Proctor at her London studio. Abstract contemporary painter, also sketches illustrative botanicals. Colour, movement and texture are central to my work. All work is original and there are selected Giclee prints of my work available. Commissions also.I studied Graphic Design at Kingston University but never actually practiced it as I realised that my passion lay in painting and drawing. Using my hands to make marks and work with colour was what I craved.

Lived in the Bahamas for several years and immersed myself in the Art scene. I participated in various group exhibitions, including at the National Gallery of the Bahamas. I also had a solo show. Back in the UK I started working as a muralist, undertaking a wide range of projects, for various clients including Little Greene, Kingston Grammar School, The Bush theatre and many residential schemes. My style fluctuated according to the project brief and ranged from illustrative to more graphic work. Ultimately, in the lead up to lockdown, I decided I wanted to discover my voice as an artist and make my own work. I undertook commissions alongside personal work.

I collect sample pots from my mural painting work, dregs from past projects to use in my pieces. Some are years old and may only contain an inch of near solidified emulsion which provides a thick impasto paint. Others may be barely used and be much more liquid. My focus is largely on the use of colour and the way colours relate to each other and interact. Colours are hidden and revealed, some are dominant, some are recessive. Creating texture and movement is also intrinsic to my work. My paintings are tactile and layered, drawing the viewer in, provoking an emotional response. Some are calm and serene whilst others are more upbeat, more energetic. I want the viewer to feel a certain way, which is always positive. The interaction of colors, how they react to each other and are hidden and revealed is at the core of my practice. I love working with colour because it has so many nuances and is constantly fascinating; the associations and combinations of colour are very interesting to me. I rely on instinct whilst painting. I really enjoy the journey, the process of making the work. I don’t have a picture in my mind of what the the end result will be. I rely on instinct whilst painting.
